Inspiration

Financial education is still a challenge for many families. Parents want to teach their children about money, but few tools make it practical and engaging. With the rise of Bitcoin as a global currency, we saw an opportunity to bring together children’s financial literacy, responsibility, and early adoption of BTC.

What it does

Money Badger is a gamified wallet app where parents can pay their children’s allowance in Bitcoin and create tasks that, when completed by them, generate rewards in BTC or vouchers. This encourages responsibility, discipline and learning about money in the digital world.

How we built it

We developed an interface for parents to set up allowances and chores, while children track their rewards within the wallet. We used Javascript, Nextjs and MySQL technologies for the wallet infrastructure, seeking security and ease of use. We use nwc to connect to a lightning wallet. This wallet is running on alby Hub.

Challenges we ran into

To create the solution, we used a lot of what we learned at the BTC++ event: we used NWC to connect to the lightning wallet, which is running on Alby hub. The integration with the wallet and the lack of frontend knowledge was a big challenge. And the limited time to develop a functional MVP for the hackathon as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a project with great social impact
  • We created a functional MVP that demonstrates the Money Badger concept in action.
  • We were able to integrate a system of gamified tasks to encourage good financial practices.
  • We developed a simple design to make it easy for any family to use, whether adults or children.

What we learned

  • We learned how to create a sub-wallet with Alby hub: the child's wallet is a sub-wallet of the parent and he has access and control authorization. More sub-wallets can be created under the parent wallet.
  • To accelerate the adoption of Bitcoin, we must encourage children in some way, and our solution is ideal for this. This even accelerates parents' view of finances. One child sees another using it and starts to want the same. This can become very scalable.

What's next for Money Badger

We plan to evolve the project to include more educational resources and a marketplace where kids can exchange their $Sats for experiences and products. We also plan to partner with brands and fintechs to expand the app’s impact.
